Six by Nico - Illusion

"Things are not always as they seem"

Six by Nico is a unique restaurant on the 'Finnieston Strip' of Glasgow, centred around the idea of a themed 6 course tasting menu running for... you guessed it.. 6 weeks at a time. The clever concept of this restaurant has made for a huge buzz around it and raving reviews. I ventured to the restaurant back when the first theme ‘The Chippie’ was introduced and knew I had to go back when a new theme I fancied arose… and so came ‘Illusion’.

The Illusion menu aims to provide diners with just that – an illusion. The menu itself has vague titles…

Chicken. Pork. Tomato. You wonder, how are they going to spice up a dish with such a simple title?

To start we ordered snacks, which came out as a cute tea set.. Ham hough and parmesan in tea cups with “piggy tea” (a broth) to pour over – yum.

First - the most interesting illusion of the menu ‘Pork’:

!? Amazing. Pork shoulder, stem ginger and soya sauce under a bed of sesame, giving the illusion of a little plant covered in soil. It took a while for my mouth to work this one out!

Second - ‘Chicken’:

An ingenious take on an illusion, chicken dressed up as scallops (even the shell to confuse the mind.. a nice little addition 😊). Wrapped in Parma ham on a bed of baba ganoush and pomegranate - delish.

Third - 'Tomato':

Salmon tartare – ahem 😉 - tomato on a base of goats cheese and an interesting nori cracker.

Fourth – ‘Prawns & Mussels’:

A take on breakfast…. Except with prawn toast and savoury porridge. Take note: shellfish bisque = your new favourite sauce.

Fifth – ‘Duck’:

Inspired by the forest floor. Maybe the prettiest plate but my least favourite for flavour.. too many sweet flavours on one plate for me.

Sixth – ‘White Chocolate’:

A white choc parfait 'egg' with a passionfruit purée ‘yolk’ nestled on lots of tangy berries and coconut pieces to balance out the sweetness. Wow! ♥

The best part of this place... the value for the amazing quality of food and service you get. £25 for 6 courses. A nice little limoncello with the bill too..

The damage? More like the dream! Cannot recommend this place enough – go, go, go!
