Banana Leaf – A Malaysian Chinese Experience
Hi all and welcome back….. Long-time no speak, life has
gotten in the way of my blogging – the horror! 😊 This week I will be reviewing 3
different restaurants - what a treat for my taste buds & for your reading,
lol
Today’s blog will focus on Malaysian Chinese restaurant,
Banana Leaf (Cambridge St, they also have a restaurant on Byres Rd).
It’s one
of those restaurants you’ve always heard about but never ventured to... so when
I found out they had a weekday early evening small plates menu, I knew now was
the perfect time to go
The restaurant sits just behind the Hilton and gets somewhat
lost in the street as doesn’t have a stand-outish shop front or décor… you
could say a bit simplistic (see pics above & below).
The menu however… FAR from simplistic:
For a small evening menu, the choice is fantastic and covers
what appears to be everything you could ever think of in terms of Malaysian
Chinese cuisine! For 3 people, we ordered 6 dishes along with some sides of
rice and noodles and left feeling very much satisfied 😊
Let’s start.. Kong Po Style Stir Fried w/ Dry Chilli &
Cashew Nuts – with a choice of chicken or shrimp (we got shrimp)
Spicy but amazing,
and a lovely amount of shrimp too! Every dish set on top of a banana leaf too was a nice touch..
Next.. Stir Fried Battered Mixed Vegetables w/ Salt and Chilli
Salt & chilli everything, anytime, always ♥
Stuffed Roasted Duck Slices w/ Prawn and Chicken Meat served
in a plum sauce
This pic may look like an iceberg lettuce advert, but hiding
under that veg were amazing battered duck pieces in a sweet plum sauce…
reminiscent of the old classic chicken balls, but x10 better 😉
Next.. Pork Belly Stir Fried with Fine Beans in a Dark Soya
sauce
My fave dish, almost crispy pork, perfectly cooked green beans
and in a delish soy sauce – YUM
Lastly.. Beef Slices
with Ginger and Spring Onion
Ginger makes any dish more amazing and this mixed with
onions, sesame seeds and pretty thick and delish beef slices was incredible!
The bill came to £65 (including a few glasses of wine) –
quite a bargain considering the amount of food we got I would say! Overall
verdict: worth a try! For those days when Chinese food isn’t just the Sunday
recovery meal... I would highly recommend Banana Leaf 😊
